August 2000: Initial performance
In 2000,the first samulnori team was organized by Choi family: Youshin Choi(father), Youngsun Kim(mother), Minjung Choi(first daughter) and Minae Choi (second daughter). The family would like to introduce traditional Korean music and volunteered several special performances such as the Lunar New Year Festival at University Elementary school (January 2001) and Korean Culture night at the International Center ( March 2001).
May 2001: Individual trial
Another trial that introduced traditional Korean music was initiated by Ra-ni Park, a doctoral student in language education at Indiana University Bloomington. She played the jang-gu solo at EASC(East Asian Studies Center) workshops in 2001 and has annually led Asian Music Workshops for American music teachers.
February 2002: Foundation of a group
Unofficial Korean samulnori team was formed byChoi family, Rani Park and Jinsob Choi, a doctoral student in Curriculum and Instruction at Indiana University. The first four members were Jinsob Choi(playing the soe), Rani Park(playing the jing), Minjung Choi(playing the buk) and Minae Choi(playing the janggu).
February 2004: Growth
By distributing e-mails and flyers to IU students, new members were
encouraged to join the samulnori team.
June 2004: Becoming an IU student organization
The samulnori team officially enrolled as an IU students’ organization and is
preparing for future activities.
